Event: March 23 | The Gata at the Aga Khan Museum

Buddhism and its pantheon of sacred voice, drum and dance swirl through a feminine hero’s journey towards Enlightenment. Personal and collective invocation is offered in story through ritual practice on stage.

The Gata is a psycho-spiritual drama tracking a woman’s wisdom quest, as told by a Shaolin Dakini Oracle. This, set in a field of excerpted scenes experienced by artist-director Irene Cortes, is an offering to goddess and audience alike. The traditional Dakini, the feminine aspect of Buddhist culture, is imputed. Its timeless and primordial centre holds its gravity throughout The Gata. Included in the cast is Venerable Lama Zasep Tulku Rinpoche, Xing Bang Fu — renowned Butoh master — a former Shaolin monk, sound healers, yoginis, and a collection of emerging opera and dance talent based in Toronto. Its essence is based in using sound as a healing tool, inducing transcendental experiences within a seated audience.
