Returning to roots after 68 years helps me count my blessings

Returning to roots after 68 years helps me count my blessings, by Mansoor LadhaBy Mansoor Ladha, Calgary Herald May 16, 2011

It was an emotional moment for me to visit my ancestral home in India for the first time at the ripe age of 68.

As a third-generation Asian born in Tanzania, East Africa, our ancestors migrated to Africa from India in the 1800s and 1900s. When East African nations became independent, most of us became citizens of the local countries, severing political ties with India.

My ancestors came from a small village called Bhadreswar in Gujarat. Bhadreswar is a four-hour drive from Bhuj, one of the major cities in Gujarat.

Aavo Padharo are words of welcome in the language of Gujarat because it is here that these words ring truly, and it is here that the guest is considered “God.” The people of Gujarat are gregariously friendly, inviting and will entice you to come again and again.
