Five Somoni A Day: Child Labour in Tajikistan – Documentary by Maria Budhwani

Graduate thesis documentary on child labour in Tajikistan submitted to the Cardiff University, Wales, and the Institute of Ismaili Studies, London.

Maria Budhwani graduated from Emory University with a degree in political science and religion. During a visit to Tajikistan in 2007, she developed an interest in the history, culture, and stories of the Tajik people. As a student in the graduate program at the Institute of Ismaili Studies, her first thesis examined the effects of Communism on the Ismaili community. While completing research for that project, she was exposed to the child labour issues in Tajikistan. This film was part of her thesis submission to Cardiff University.

  1. Yes Tajikistan has many problems and Child Labor is one of them. But how can a poor country feed it self and enjoy luxuries. It is easy to Criticize but difficult to execute positive strategies. Dushanbe is a booming city and naturally with economic progress Dushanbe Children will notice improvements in Life.

  2. Good job! However, one has to take into consideration the cultural and social contexts of a society as well. In most cases it is just giving an hand to family. In many families children are not forced to do things but it is their choice and respect to their parents. Will one call that “child labours” too?

  4. Indeed it is a challenging issue for Tajikistan, the Government and NGO should address this issue on a grass route level, one of the ideas is to permute tourism which will help the common people . Tajikistan has great tourism potential.

  5. I been to the area in 1993. The resercher highlighted only one part of the picture. didn,t given any solution for the Child Labour. This is not only in Toojikistan, but all and every where in the un Developed World. In my observation I saw in two Developed countries as well where I worked. But no doubt the ration is very low. The people whom are working in such countries what is the salary package they are taking not shared by the researcher. I do agree with the Words and Deed of Aga Khan-I’ve, whom initiated the Time and Knowledge concept. That is the key for the solution—-maximum of the funds by Developed countries should be invested on the people not on salary and lag surges and leisure of the people whom are appointing through recommendations and personal relation basis.volunteers and honourably staff should be encouraged on such assignments.
