On Thu 9 Dec 2009, Mendaki recognize the contribution of Assistant Professor Reshma Merchant and Aziz Merchant at the ETF-Merchant Primary School Bursary Award Ceremony held in Singapore. In attendance was the Minister in Charge of Muslim Affairs and Minister for Environment, His Excellency Dr Yaccob Ibrahim. To date since 2007, 180 students from needy families have benefited from this program. Reshma and Aziz have further pledge to assist another 240 students by extending this program by another 3 years.
Speech excerpt by his Excellency MR HAIDER SITHAWALLA:
We are indeed grateful for the continued strong support we receive from our community, our philanthropists and corporate donors who come from all walks of life, including non-Malay/Muslim individuals, some of whom prefer to remain anonymous. For the academic year 2010, our assistance to the primary school students will be further strengthened with the continued donation from Mr Aziz Ameerali Merchant and his wife, Dr Reshma Merchant. In 2007, he had donated $90,000 to the ETF-Merchant Primary School Bursary Award to help about 180 students from needy families during the 2008-2010 academic years. Next year, the couple will be donating another $40,000 each year for the next three years. This means, they would have contributed a total of $210,000 to ETF. For this year, 80 more students would benefit from their generosity.
Our Mubarakis to you both.
