Zafir Nagji: Boy’s personal sacrifices make him ‘great kid’

Ten-year-old cited for helping victims of abuse

By Sarah McGinnis, Calgary HeraldOctober 4, 2009 8:07 AM

When the Nagji family opened their home to a young woman and her baby seeking refuge from domestic violence last year, little Zafir gave up his bedroom to the guests.

The now 10-year-old boy swiftly embraced the mother and her son by giving the tot some of his toys and singing the baby to sleep.

“The young lady, she was being domestically abused by her husband. She had a young child which I adopted as my brother,” Zafir said Saturday.

“We took her home because she needed shelter and we wanted to help out. It was for the best. Now she’s very safe.”

The young family are now on their own and thriving.

But touched by this personal experience with domestic violence, Zafir began working at his father’s restaurant to raise money to help fight it.
