International Model United Nation’s Conference – March 8-11, 2007

The Douglas College International Model United Nations (DOUGIMUN) began in the summer of 1997. Marlene Hancock, member of the Political Science Department, first took a delegation of eager students to Cairo, Egypt to participate in the American University’s Model UN. We were ever so inspired by the Egyptian experience that we saw a need for a western based international model United Nations. Through the hard work of Marlene Hancock and a number of dedicated students, Douglas College saw it’s own Model UN in February of 1999. From that time, DOUGIMUN has greatly grown in its number of participants, attracting senior high school students, college and university students from across North America.

Dear Delegates,

On behalf of the Secretariat I would like to extend to you a warm welcome to the seventh annual Douglas College International Model United Nations. We are proud to offer a dynamic, stimulating and exciting conference for 2007. There are many Model United Nations conferences held around the world, and we are proud to announce that we are currently the largest high school, college and university MUN in Western Canada.

Past conferences have tackled a wide variety of topics within a range of United Nations councils and committees, and this year we are continuing the tradition. The theme of this year’s conference is “Peace in an Age of Turmoil”. The main theme, as well as other issues pertinent to each assembly, will be carried to each of the five forums: The United Nations Security Council (SC), The United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC), The World Health Organization (WHO), The International Criminal Court (ICC) and The Arab League. Our conference boasts a diplomats evening where delegates can meet ambassadors, politicians and other dignitaries. The conference also includes a thematic cultural night, with a dinner and dance.

The conference will run for four days, with the delegates participating in the formal sessions of debate during the daytime, with both formal and informal events in the evenings. In addition to the regular forums there will be a live video conference with either Washington D.C., or The United Nations. The conference will conclude with a closing ceremony at the Ismaili Mosque where awards will be presented to various distinguished delegates.

Both the Secretariat and myself thank you for joining us at the 2007 Douglas College International Model United Nations, and look forward to your participation in this excellent and exciting conference.

Welcome all,
Jonathan Leighs
Secretary General
