Porto Cervo: An Ultra-Exclusive Town on Sardinia’s Emerald Coast

The Eccelsa Aviation private terminal at Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport on the Italian island of Sardinia is one of Europe’s busiest, according to the airport, which says much about the types of people who visit this part of the island, known for its startling turquoise waters and dreamy beaches.

The fortunes of Sardinia’s northeast coastline were transformed in the 1960s, when Prince Karim Aga Khan fell in love with it and saw its potential to become a high-end holiday destination. He named it the Costa Smeralda (Emerald Coast) and created the town of Porto Cervo from scratch.

Today, the town is as exclusive as they come. In the height of summer, there are yachts as far as the eye can see in the bay, and in its eponymous marina, which, as of this summer, includes the floating palace of the Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov, a megayacht named Dilbar, according to Alasdair Pritchard, of Knight Frank.
