As the first Muslim President of BPW Canada, Jenny attended the 29th Congress of the International Federation of Business and Professional Women (BPW International) held in Cairo, Egypt in October 2017. BPW International is an 87 year old organization with 35,000 members globally and holds Consultative Status at the United Nations Economic and Social Council.
As Jenny assumed her two year presidency, BPW Canada presented Centennial Awards to 100 Women’s Organizations across the nation to mark the 100th Anniversary of Women’s Suffrage during the 2016 Convention held in Calgary, Alberta. At the end of their 2017 Annual General Meeting, BPW Canada presented Visionary Awards to BPW Members across the country as the visionaries took their seats around the Confederation Chamber table in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island to commemorate Canada’s 150th Anniversary of Confederation.
Under Jenny’s leadership, BPW Canada appointed National Chairpersons to lead each of their priority areas and have analyzed their membership strategies and programs through the lens of diversity and inclusion. Jenny was instrumental in re-establishing BPW Montreal in 2017. In Canada and abroad, she strives to spread the message of pluralism to explain the difference between “tolerating” and “embracing” differences. Jenny spoke about this not only during the formal launch of BPW Montreal but also in New York City where she attends the Session on the Commission for Status of Women at the United Nations Headquarters every March; in India where she led the theme of Migration and Mobility at the Women Economic Forum; and in Egypt where she participated on a panel for Women, Peace and Security through BPW International.
Diversity and Inclusion is one of BPW Canada’s operating principles when it comes to improving the economic, political and social conditions of all women.
Jenny says “it’s a very significant time in Canada, not only is it Canada’s Sesquicentennial, it is also the Diamond Jubilee of His Highness The Aga Khan… and so as a Canadian Ismaili Muslim Woman practicing Immigration for over 2 decades, it is time to reflect, appreciate and generously give back”.
