My Mum taught in the Aga Khan Girls School. In colonial Tanganyika schools were segregated by race: there were white only schools, schools for Asian children (such as the Aga Khan school) and schools for the African children. Very few African children went to school..
Here is a picture of the girls from the Aga Khan School. My Mum is in the back row, fourth from the left.
My sister (second from left) and me (bottom right) are pictured on a picnic with some of the girls from the school. We were dropped off from a lorry in a remote dry river bed for the picnic. Unfortunately the lorry did not return when arranged and after it got dark we lit fires to keep away the hyenas while we waited till we were eventually picked up.
