Exploring Islam: October 27 – December 2, 2016
Since the 7th century, Islam has existed in breathtaking variety as a religion, civilization, cultural and political force. To understand the Muslim experience, NLC will discuss different approaches to the study of Islam; learn about important episodes in Islamic history, and consider the experiences of Muslim women and youth.
They will also visit the new Aga Khan Museum in Toronto, an architectural gem that houses an important collection of Islamic works.
The vision of the Northumberland Learning Connection (NLC) is to foster lifelong learning and a deeper understanding of the world. NLC achieve this by drawing on instructors and resources from pre-eminent educational institutions and other prestigious organizations.
Nov. 13 — Dr. Ruba Kana’an, head of education and scholarly programs, and designer Arriz Hassan of Arriz and Co. Conduct a private lecture-and-tour of the Aga Khan Museum and the Ismaili Centre in Toronto.
The series includes an afternoon at the Capitol Theatre, Port Hope, with Zarqa Nawaz, who wrote and produced the popular CBC television series ‘Little Mosque on the Prairie’, and a private tour of the Aga Khan Museum and Ismaili Centre in Toronto. ‘The Life of Muhammad’, a three-part BBC miniseries with British author and journalist Rageh Omaar, documenting the life of Mohammad, will be screened at 6 p.m. prior to the lectures on three evenings, Nov. 3, 10 and 17.
