Against the Grain Theatre presents AYRE at the Ismaili Centre Toronto

Against the Grain Theatre presents AYRE at the Ismaili Centre Toronto“Jewish, Arabic and Spanish elements come together in Osvaldo Golijov’s inspired salmagundi of songs drenched in folk and pop traditions of the Mediterranean, from danceable laptop-powered grooves to radiant slow songs full of yearning.”

A lush fusion of Arabic, Hebrew, Sardinian, and Sephardic folk melodies and texts, Argentinian composer Osvaldo Golijov’s AYRE is a thrill to experience and a brilliant example of 21st-century cultural counterpoint.

Golijov’s AYRE — meaning “air” or “melody” in medieval Spanish — largely centers on southern Spain with its intermingling of three cultures (Christian, Arab and Jewish) in an era before the expulsion of the Jews in the late 15th-century.
