Today, I embarked on the next “BIG” adventure of my life: a trip across the world to volunteer with the University of Central Asia, in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. Although it is a big deal, I am surprisingly very comfortable with the thought of going there, and don’t have as many butterflies as I would’ve thought.
Perhaps this is because I have simply matured in life, and experienced weird and wild things which have opened my eyes to the world? Perhaps I am officially a “well-traveled,” worldly human! Or perhaps it is the practical reality that I am going for a few months, whereas my brother, Malik, was there for an entire year, and I went to Bishkek to visit him for a week in 2014. I suppose it’s some combination of the above, and of course (as my dad would be proud to know) the fact that I have been working in consulting for two and a half years now, and thus have developed some “grit” so to speak, used to being put into situations where I have to learn quickly and dive into new situations, environments, and subject matters extremely efficiently.
All this to say, I am quite impressed by my seeming sense of composure. Maybe it hasn’t hit me just yet. :)
One thing I’d like to note is how beautiful it was to go to Halton Jamatkhana (the place of worship closest to home, and the congregation I grew up in) last night.
