Quasar Padamsee has based Khatijabai’s character on his Ismaili Khoja paternal grandmother, Kulsum Padamsee.

Mumbai's Prithvi Theatre features perennial favourite "Khatijabai of Karmali Terrace"Adapted and directed by Q, this play is about an orphan, Khatija. When she marries into the Karmali household it seems Khatija has finally found a family she longs for. But her life doesn’t seem all that happy. She’s always vying for the most favoured position with her in-laws, pressuring her children and disagreeing with her sister-in-law. The play is about the strength of a woman who emerges as the powerful matriarch, wrapping everyone in her web of care.
