Nishiki Maredia: Two college feminists make One Direction tees for a cause

On 1950 Collective’s website, college students Angela Jin and Nishiki Maredia mug for the camera wearing their custom-designed sweatshirts. The message scrawled across their chests is cheeky and clear: “Favorite position: CEO.”

The two friends, who go to school on opposite sides of the country, launched their women-run T-shirt company in January 2015 as a side project to make some change. Well, that side project has taken off fast, netting $200K and grossing $50K in the first year, the duo say.

“It was just an outlet for us to laugh about dumb things,” says Jin, “and then slowly but surely it grew into what we have now.”

The company’s products focuses on their interests, from boy bands and pop culture to body and social issues. Most of the graphic designs are created by Jin in Photoshop, and the drawings are commissioned from band fandoms. They range from tees emblazoned with One Direction fan art to tributes to Black Lives Matter…
