Ever gone out for a night on the town with no sense of where you’ll end up? That’s what 1,500 Edmontonians have signed up for with this years Dîner en Blanc event. Guests won’t know until minutes before they’re supposed to picnic where they’re heading. The mystery all part of the joie de vivre.

Excerpt: At its heart, Dîner en Blanc is still about a gathering of friends.

But it’s also about elegance, secrecy and effort.

Khadija Jetha is a table head: she’s in charge of getting about 25 couples seated at the dinner. But even though she’s an organizer, she admits she doesn’t know where they’ll be going.

Jetha and the rest of the guests will find out just minutes before they’re to converge on the clandestine spot. That’s because the location for the picnic is a mystery.

“That’s part of the buzz of excitement” says the University of Alberta recruiter, who describes the event as “electrifying.”

“I think it’s a fantastic way to get involved in something that happens worldwide, but also something that’s very original and unique to Edmonton.”
