Police Const. Garrett Styles was honoured, and remembered on Sunday at a memorial ride in York Region.
Dozens of cyclists signed up for the 5th annual Memorial Ride for Styles, a 40 km bike ride from Newmarket to Markham.
“Today is so important for us because it is a chance for us to remember and reflect on the loss of Const. Garrett Styles,” says York Regional Police Deputy Chief Thomas Carrique. “It’s an opportunity for the community and police to come together and remember a great officer and the tragedy that led to his death.”
Styles was killed in 2011 after he was dragged and pinned by a vehicle he had stopped in the Town of East Gwillimbury. Closing arguments were presented last week in a Newmarket court in the first-degree murder trial of a young man accused in his death.
Officials say $16,000 was raised through the ride this year. The money will help support Victim Services of York Region, Big Brothers, Big Sisters, Special Olympics and the Aga Khan Foundation.
