The Cricket World Cup may be the pinnacle of the game for professionals but the real beauty of any sport lies in the pleasure it gives to those at the bottom of the society.
A ‘Mini-World Cup’, jointly organised at the Vinay Marg Sports Complex by the Australian and New Zealand High Commissions here on Friday, was witness to some of that innocent pleasure. Six teams from three NGOs working with under-privileged children – Chintan, Magic Bus and Aga Khan Foundation – played each other for the winners’ trophy.
Boys wearing skull caps, joint teams of girls and boys, a spontaneous sharing of the limited resources and the sheer joy of playing on a proper cricket pitch with complete kit – the event was a day of celebration for the children.
“Everybody loves cricket and this is an effort from our side to bring some fun and celebration to these children on the eve of the wonderful month of cricket we have ahead of us,” Australian High Commissioner Patrick Suckling said about the event.
