The Aga Khan University Hospital Marks 7 Years Of Preemie Care

Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi is home to the first and only Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in the East and Central African region.

Coastweek– The Aga Khan University Hospital held an event to celebrate babies born prematurely at the hospital.

This marked the seventh preemie day of the annual event since its launch.

The forum brought together expectant mothers, parents of pre-term infants and their children to encourage each other and share their experiences on preemie parenting.

Medical specialists from the hospital including paeditricians, obstetricians and gynaecologists and neonatal nurses gave talks and advise on trends in delivery care, interbio, preemie parenting, baby’s health, breastfeeding and pain management in children.

Data released by the World Health Organisation during the World Preemie Day shows that about 15 million babies are born premature yearly and almost one million die due to birth complications.

In Kenya approximately 200,000 infants are born premature each year.
