Pakistan has worst record in child mortality | Pakistan Observer

Acknowledging that child mortality of under-5 age group has greatly reduced in Pakistan, internationally known pediatrician Dr Ghaffar Billo nevertheless felt unhappy that his country still had worst record in the region as far as child survival rate is concerned.

Pakistan is a member of the WHO and UNICEF global programe … For 67 years, such an important subject has not received government attention which it should have, Other speakers presented figures with slide shows which were horrifying to notice that child mortality remains high in Pakistan, especially in rural areas. If it was 35 to 40 percent in rural areas, it was luckily 10 percent in cities.

Among those speaking on a subject of extremely important nature, was the provincial special secretary, Health, Dr Khalid Hussain Sheikh, the eminent child health expert Dr Iqbal Sheikh, and experts like Dr Abdul Ghani Sheikh, Dr Saleem Peerani, and Dr Akbar Ali, all highly qualified experts in their respective fields, drawn from Liaquat and Aga Khan Medical Universities, and Civil Hospital, Karachi.

Dr Billo who for long years served as professor of Pediatrics at Civil Hospital and Dow Medical College, now a university, and has been associated with WHO and UNICEF, is now at Aga Khan Hospital and University.
