Event – October 22 | Aga Khan University, London, UK: The Yezidis of Northern Iraq: Catastrophe and Survival

Institute for the Study of Muslim CivilisationsThe Yezidis, a religious minority located mostly in Northern Iraq, came to the attention of the world in August when Islamic state advances into Mount Sinjar forced many thousands to flee their homes amid summary executions and kidnappings. However, this is only one in a long series of persecutions remembered by a community which has weathered many storms in the past and undergone many changes in its struggle to survive.

The Yezidis form part of a complex structure of faith communities that have inhabited the area, a structure which has been broken by recent events. This paper will consider the prospects for survival of this ancient community.
