Ashna Maredia receives Duke of Edinburgh award

WATERLOO REGION — Five local students were among 104 Canadian youth who have received the Duke of Edinburgh gold awards.

Gov. Gen. David Johnston presented the awards to the students at a ceremony Friday night in Toronto.

The awards, which are open to youth ages 14 to 25, honour those who have strived in four areas — community service, skill development, physical recreation and adventurous journey.

The awards were founded by Prince Phillip in 1963 to encourage personal development and community involvement in young people.

The local recipients are:

– Ashna Maredia of Kitchener, who worked with an Ismaili centre, took a four-day hike in Algonquin Park and participated in business club as well as Bollywood and hip hop dancing.
