Description: From Quebec and Western Europe to Turkey, Iran and Afghanistan, dress codes are a battleground for colliding views of secularism and religion. Yet these battles mask the real stakes: the space that citizens, notably women and minorities, are entitled to in a democracy. Can pluralism trump populist belief in a “clash of civilizations”?
Dr. Amyn B. Sajoo is Scholar-in-Residence at Simon Fraser University’s Centre for the Comparative Study of Muslim Societies and Cultures.
He is a specialist in human rights, civil society and public ethics, with special regard to the Muslim world. Recent publications: A Companion to the Muslim World (2009), Muslim Modernities (2008) and Muslim Ethics: Emerging Vistas (2004).
