THE Tabriz Historic Bazaar Complex was one of the most important international trade and cultural centres on the Silk Road. Tucked in the province of Eastern Azerbaijan, the town was at its zenith in the 13th century when it became the capital city of the Safavid kingdom; it remained an important commercial hub until the end of 18th century.
The complex, covering 27ha with over 5.5km of covered bazaars, comprises a series of interconnected, covered, brick structures, buildings, and enclosed spaces for different functions.
But by the late 20th century, the ancient buildings were crumbling. Traders were disenchanted with the dilapidated surroundings and fewer customers were coming. Many of the traders had abandoned their shops.
