Aleem Walji: How Does The World Bank Think About Scaling Innovation? - Forbes“The days of thinking about the World Bank or any single university as the global repository of knowledge and expertise are gone. The smartest person in the room is the room,” said World Bank Institute Director of Innovation Labs Aleem Walji in a recent interview with the Skoll World Forum’s Rahim Kanani on all things innovation and development. Aleem is the Director of the World Bank’s Innovation Labs. He leads initiatives which leverage open data, mapping and information technology to improve service delivery to the poor. He also oversees the Development Marketplace program which provides finance, advisory services, and policy support to social businesses and social enterprises serving base of the pyramid clients in South Asia, East Africa, and the Middle East. 

Prior to joining WBI, Aleem served as a Head of Global Development Initiatives at Google.org, with a focus on eastern Africa. He led efforts related to increasing transparency and accountability in government and supporting the growth of small and medium-size enterprises in Africa. Aleem was also the first CEO of the Aga Khan Foundation in Syria.
