Curtain Call – Fictional Story by Alim Nagji

Curtain Call - Fictional Story by Alim NagjiAcknowledgements: This story is a work of fiction, inspired by my experiences as a Resident during an elective in a small town in Eastern Uganda.

2013 – Nagji, Alim

She was my own private dancer, dressed beautifully in a colour that was once pink, now faded and worn away with use, it glimmered softly in the evening sun. During the day, when the heat melted through my flesh and sweat rolled down my wrinkled skin like rain water returning to the ocean, she lay unmoving across the window sill. When evening struck and the sun yielded its throne, the earth, sensing his grasp over the domain weakening, began to whistle softly through the green hills and sought to topple the imposing rock that rose out of the landscape just beyond the window. I watched this daily drama, the rise of the sun obscured from view, though plainly visible as his reach filtered in from the corners of my vision before his brilliance beat down with such fury I could barely open my eyes.
