WHO Goodwill Ambassador visits Gorno-Badakhshan (mainly Ismaili communities) where leprosy is endemic
Mr Yohei Sasakawa, WHO Goodwill Ambassador for Leprosy Elimination and the Chairman of the Nippon Foundation, visited Tajikistan during July 8-11, 2013, to familiarize himself with the leprosy situation in the Republic.
Excerpt: “While the country has never had widespread leprosy, it is endemic in Khorog and some districts of Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast (GBAO) and the Vanchsky, Ishkashimsky and Shugnansky regions. According to the Republican Skin and Venereal Diseases Clinical Center, Gornyi Badakhshan in the GBAO oblast is the most endemic region of the world for leprosy.”
