Abstract: This paper discusses the historical development of Ismaili law, particualry in the Nizari Ismaili community. It reviews various stages of development and articulation of this law and salient doctrines and animating ideas. The paper advances the argument that the role of the Imam, and in particular acces to the living Imam, has been the cardinal principle of Ismaili law.
