More than 300 people from across Saskatchewan took steps — many of them — in Regina on Sunday to battle worldwide poverty.
The World Partnership Walk raises funds for development projects aimed at fighting global poverty with the non-profit Aga Khan Foundation Canada.
“We live in a global planet and we are very interconnected. It’s hard to believe that in 2013, there are still people in this planet living on $2 a day,” said Nancy Tse, regional campaign manager for the foundation.
“As global citizens, we need to all do our part.”
The walk was spearheaded in 1985 in Vancouver by women who, after coming to Canada, wanted to try to help people in their home countries in Africa and Asia. The group raised $55,000 with that first event, while getting 1,000 people to participate.
The walk has since spread to 10 Canadian cities and 40,000 participants. It raised $7 million last year for various development projects.
