The Ugandan Asians, newly married, were given 90 days by Idi Amin to flee their homeland in the 1970s
By Tara Carman, Vancouver Sun – Shamshad and Jalal Jaffer were on a plane over East Africa when the pilot came on the loudspeaker to announce that Idi Amin was giving Ugandan Asians 90 days to leave the country.
There was a collective gasp of disbelief on the plane.
Nobody believed it, Jalal recalled, because Ugandans of Asian descent — including some whose African roots went back several generations — ran many of the country’s businesses.
