Sahir Ali: PhD student at Case Western University in Biomedical EngineeringSahirzeeshan Ali is a PhD student at Case Western University and a Research Assistant at Case Center for Imaging and Personalized Diagnostics (CCIPD).

Sahir is involved with some cutting edge cancer research that is going to revolutionize diagnosis and prognosis of cancer. At CCIPD, researchers combine artificial intelligence, bioinformatics and advanced mathematics to automatically analyze medical images to diagnosis and predict disease outcome. Currently, specially for breast and prostate cancer, a biopsy is performed on a patient suspected of cancerous tumor. A pathologist then analyzes the biopsy under a microscope to determine the extent of cancer and diagnosis is suggested. In their research, Sahir and his team train computers to automatically learn how to detect cancer by looking at biopsy images, MRI and CT scans, and localize the tumor. Moreover, the computer also predicts with high accuracy what will be the survival chances of the patient. The entire process is without any human effort and they have developed system that can accurately perform this task with 87% accuracy.

During his Masters, Sahir published 6 first-authored peer reviewed papers, and given presentations at major conferences in Toronto, Chicago, Florida and Shanghai. He also has an international pending patent file. Recently, he was awarded $2000 grant to travel to Shanghai for a seminar to present his work: http://www.ece.rutgers.edu
