Upper Canada College students Elliot Kaufman and Alnur Kassim-Lakha finished second out of 56 teams at the annual International Competition for Young Debaters at England’s Oxford University earlier this month. Kaufman was named top speaker out of the 112 debaters who took part in the tournament, while Kassim-Lakha finished as the seventh best speaker.
The event is the leading international English-language tournament for junior debaters who are 15 and younger, and the UCC duo qualified to represent Canada along with teams from Vancouver and Montreal. Kaufman and Kassim-Lakha went up against a British team in the final, which took place in front of hundreds of spectators at the famed Oxford Union Society Debating Hall, where the topic was: “This House would ban dictators from participating in or hosting major international sporting events.”
Alnur, Great job. I am so proud of you.
