Ten years ago, my husband and I took our three young children to spend a month in Gulmit, a centuries-old, historic village nestled in the Himalayan Mountains in northern Pakistan, near what was once part of the ancient Silk Road trade route connecting Pakistan and China.
Upon arrival, we whole-heartedly embraced the community and its culture, going as far as enrolling our children in a local school in order for them to have as real a taste as possible of life in a place that was so different from our perfect, bubble-of-a- life on Vancouver’s North Shore.
