Aliya-Jasmin Sovani: Growing up on volunteerism | WaterlooChronicle.caMTV’s Aliya-Jasmin Sovani shares passion for making a difference

By Paige Desmond, Chronicle Staff

Aliya-Jasmin Sovani is more than a TV personality.

Her parents, originally from Uganda, instilled in her the value of helping others from a young age.

“My mom’s really into philanthropy and I was kind of raised on it,” Sovani said.

She first dipped her toe in the pool as a pre-teen, selling raffle tickets at her parents’ annual golf fundraiser for the Aga Khan Development Network, which supports social development projects in Asia and Africa.

But it was her participation in a tutoring program for orphaned children and widows from Afghanistan during the war, which helped Sovani realize volunteering wasn’t about her.
