Volunteering in a sexual assault crisis centre in Montreal brought Ambreen Walji in close contact with several social workers who often complained about the legal system’s lack of empathy towards the victims they fought so hard to protect and help rebuild their shattered lives.
It was an eye-opening experience and one that led her to a rare academic program at the University of Windsor, one that once completed, will allow her to practice either law or social work, but more importantly, equip her with the compassion she feels she needs to adequately represent society’s most vulnerable.
“Social works trains you to communicate with people who are in an entirely different situation than you are,” said Walji, who spent the past five years in Montreal where she completed an undergraduate degree in American history at McGill University and then worked as a copy editor at the Montreal Gazette.
