Winter is on its way in the northern hemisphere, bringing excitement to skiers in Europe, America – and Afghanistan. The Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), a Geneva-based development agency, is trying to introduce ski-touring and cross country skiing to Bamyan in central Afghanistan, as a way of improving the region’s economy. The Koh-i-Baba mountains, which reach 5,000m, were first skied last winter by expatriates working in Afghanistan, and the plan is to encourage more visitors this winter. The AKDN is recruiting a guide to lead tourists and train local guides. http://www.akdn.org
