The Religion Beat: On the Importance of Civic Space in Islam

While I myself am not a scholar of Islam, per se, as someone who is interested in the ways that Religious Studies and Human Geography intersect, and having the need to rustle up a topic for this week’s blog, I was intrigued by the phrasing of the announcement of a series of events for the Calgary Jamat (community) leading up to the foundation ceremony of the Ismaili Centre and Museum. These events, which involved a number of film screenings, were apparently meant to educate and elaborate on the (if I recall correctly) “importance of civic space in Islam,” in preparation for the ceremony and arrival of the Imam. – More
