Irfan Jessa: Reclaiming Quality Of Life, A Stretch At A Time. | University of Calgary

Irfan Jessa’s Undergraduate Student Research Project creates an innovative program to help lung patients enjoy a better quality of life.

A few years ago, Georgie Coldridge was enjoying life – playing squash, running and going on long distance cycling trips. All of that changed when she was diagnosed with a rare lung disease called Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF). “It’s been terrible,” Coldridge says, “but I’m trying to do what I can to stay active.”

A new exercise program, the brainchild of UofC undergrad Irfan Jessa, is aimed at helping people with IPF, like Georgie, to enjoy life a little more.

IPF is a scarring of the lungs that usually affects older adults. The scarring begins on the outside of the lungs and over time progresses into the middle until the whole lung is scarred. Because of the scarring they have trouble breathing or doing any sort of activity and usually require oxygen.
