Foreign and private aid can change the world, by Naheed Nenshi

By Naheed Nenshi, For The Calgary Herald November 5, 2009

Tomorrow at 6 p.m. at Pages on Kensington, my Wednesday counterpart on this page, Barry Cooper, and I will be joined by Dr. Jennifer Brenner from the Alberta Children’s Hospital to discuss the future of foreign aid. This panel is the first in a series called Ideas that Matter, sponsored by Mount Royal University, and admission is free. The conversation, though, will be invaluable.

The West has spent $2.3 trillion on foreign aid over the last five decades, and there has been very little impact in the poorest countries. Indeed, when my parents left Tanzania in 1971, the per capita GDP there was $444 and 21 out of 100 kids died before age five. In 2003, the needle had hardly moved. The per capita income was $583 and child mortality was 17 out of 100.

How then do we think about the plight of the world’s poor?
