Cultural Conservation and Rehabilitation in Post-Conflict Afghanistan

Presented by Ajmal Maiwandi, Deputy Program Manager, Aga Khan Trust for Culture , Afghanistan

Urban regeneration in historic cities is a huge challenge, even in times of peace and stability. But to undertake urban regeneration in Afghanistan´s current turbulent environment is an especially complex task that requires an intimate understanding of the dynamics and history of urban communities. Ajmal Maiwandi will discuss the cultural conservation and rehabilitation projects currently being carried out by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture in Afghanistan, namely the rehabilitation of Bagh-e-Babur, which was laid out by the founder of the Mughal Dynasty; conservation of the Timur Shah Mausoleum in Kabul; and the extensive conservation and urban rehabilitation work that is under way in Herat. Mr. Maiwandi will also detail how the programs have dealt with the social impact of an enduring conflict that still overshadows the lives of many Afghans.

Admission to the lectures is free and open to the public. A reception to meet the speaker follows each lecture.

This lecture is made possible through the generous support of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, in collaboration with His Highness Prince Aga Khan Shia Imami Ismaili Council for the Southwestern United States.

This lecture are presented in conjunction with the exhibition, Afghanistan: Hidden Treasures from the National Museum, Kabul, on view March 1 through May 17, 2009.
