Kenya to host int’l conference, festival on ‘World of Indian Ocean’

APA-Nairobi (Kenya) Kenya will this month host a five day international conference and festival on the “Worlds of Indian Ocean”, (WIO 2009), a theme connecting the past to the future, organizers announced here on Saturday.

The conference will be opened by Firoz Rasul, President of the Aga Khan University (AKU) on February 19 and is expected to bring participants from all over the world.

According to the organizers, the WIO 2009 event underlines the intention of the Aga Khan University to prioritise regional perspectives and dynamics, exploring nuances that have arisen through the region’s centuries old encounters with the realm of the Indian Ocean.

  1. Hello, I am Vali Jamal from Kampala, old-time Uganda resident. It happens that I am currently writing a major book on Ugandan Asians based around the 1972 expulsion. It has a section on Pioneers in Uganda (15 accounts) and quotations from Periplus of the Erithraen Sea written in C1st which documents Gujarat’s connections at that time with East Africa. There’s lots on numbers – how many, where did they go, how many came back, what happened to the Uganda economy on our departure. I had written about the last in journal articles in 1976 and in 2-3 books. These are cited on the google site. I gave a dummy copy to Pres Rasul here last week and ResRep Mahmoud Ahmed has seen the full current draft – 360 pp, but growing to accommodate all communities in Uganda. There are plans for me to give a public lecture about it in Vancouver. The PM of Uganda has seen a copy. Also Zahid Rajan, editor of Awaaz magazine from Nairobi.
