Mozambique: Former textile factory Texlom is expected to employ 600 women when it re-opens under AKF

Maputo, Mozambique, 5 Feb – The Texlom textiles factory in the Mozambican province of Maputo may start operating again in this half of the year, initially focussing on products for export, the assistant national director for Trade and Industry said in Maputo.

Nilsa Miquidade told newspaper Notícias that the re-launch of the factory was part of the efforts being made by the Government with a view to revitalising the textiles sector, which ended with the approval last year of a strategy that included a number of tax incentives, including a zero percent tax rate for the first ten years in business.

Texlom, whose name after being taken over by the Agha Khan Foundation for Development is now Moztec, is expected to employ some 600 women.

Overall it is expected that around 100,000 jobs will be created in the country before 2012, as part of the Government’s strategy to establish a specialised textile industry, the recuperation of existing industry and encouragement of traditional methods of production of typical Mozambican products.
