Pleading the case of Jhirik

Thursday, December 25, 2008

The town hosts the 400-years-old graveyard of Lakho Pir, as well as the palaces of Aga Hassan, the leader of Aga Khan Community since 1870. It is believed that Aga Hasan along with some families of Khoja communy came to Jhirik from Iran in 1870 and settled here for almost a year.

The majority of some 5,000 residents of Jhirik are certain that Jinnah was born in their village. Those who disagree, are primarily school-going children, who argue that he was born in Wazir Mansion in Karachi. “They quote from their textbooks reading the official version of the Government of Pakistan,” a local of Jhirik told The News.

He added that up until the early 1960s, textbooks revealed that Jinnah had been born in Jhirik. The difference in textbooks arose due to textbooks issued by the same Sindh Text Book Board, he said, adding that such discrepancy confuses children. According to him, the confusion increases when they are told by elders of the time when our forefathers used to work for Jinnah’s father, Poonja Bhai, and of the time when he distributed sweets over the birth Jinnah.
