To the big show with a new ‘do’

After hosting a successful Summer Olympic Games, the sporting spotlight is moving back to China. This is the final installment of a Province Sports series on B.C. athletes who will be competing at the Beijing Paralympics, which run Sept. 6-17.

A few days before his departure to Beijing and his first Paralympics, bocce singles player Hanif Mawji went to the barbershop to get trimmed for his big trip.

When he came out what was left of his hair was dyed blond and letters that said C-A-N-A-D-A were carved out of it. You had to do a half circle of his wheelchair to see them all, but they were there and Hanif couldn’t have been more pleased if he’d done the clipping himself.

“He’s totally devoted to his sport [indoor bocce],” said his father and assistant Hussein, who accompanied his son to Beijing.

“He wanted to prepare for his first Games. He wanted to stand out. His haircut is how he is showing that he’s ready for the Paralympics.”
