The new Kampala Serena Hotel began life as the Nile Hotel, a government-run 65-room hotel and adjacent conference facility, which was built in 1975. Leased to Serena two years ago, the hotel has been closed for 18 months while, at the cost of a million-and-a-half dollars a month, it was transformed into one of Africa’s most stunning hotels.

An inspirational blend of 5-star polish and pan-African panache, this 152-room world-class hotel will showcase the cream of Ugandan culture while delivering the ultimate in personalized service, international cuisine, social style and business reliability.

Just revisted your 2007 article and since its 2022 thought a short comment on something that is irksome should cause a “ripple effect” of positive reaction.
Having been there for CHOGM and when HM Queen Elizabeth graced tge occasion as well as Serena Kampala and subsequently its place as the *5 accomodation at Kampala I firstly commend tgmhe extremely hardworking staff that maintain and endeavour to sustain this reputation.
However what must be realised and endorsed is that UGANDA is an independent country and not some kind of federated state to KENYA. Management of the Ugandan operation in the hands of Mahmud Janmohamed ever since 2009 while sitting powerfully at Nairobi will not make Serena Kampala the rated hotel it is supposed to be! Complaints go unheeded as do recommendations and perforce of its location convenience with a conference centre courtesy of the erstwhile Idi amin and the once functional Nile Hotel much of this Serena location and otherwise was a pre-investment to hand that was repurposed and archtecturally enhanced. So at the very least emphasis on food and quality should have remained a focus?
Serena Kampala intially had a regular team of chefs frim Europe to come train and set standards for the Bakery and full dining fare. Tge buffets were superlative. Expensive indeed but people meet for coffee cake snacks regularly but expect value for their money? Bakery produce is definitely “bush” quality now where stodgy cakes loaves that weigh like lead and ruin good sandwiches are the norm? Why? Who inspects sustsins and msintains quality? No its not the Food & Beverages Manager’s fault because the actual chain of sustained quality begins with the management and the CEO and then the range of inputs like supplies and regular assessment of where the glitches are. Power distance and remotely handling Kampala from Nairobi is not in 2022 a sustainable feature and the CEO does not regukarly visit nor retain sn active interest in the Serena Kampala.
How fair is this for a Consumer that comes to the hotel expecting vslue and equivalence with other international 5 star hotels and has to accept 2 star quality where is ‘Black Forest Gateau’ is a cloying brick of dry cake that remotely resembles chocolate and cream but tastes of nothing at all? So who sets standards when you spend $10.00 at the cafe bakery to have your expectations dashed??
There is a real need to accept that Kampala is an international city that independently has its own needs and cultures unlike Kenya or Tanazania..all can help each other in the chain of arrangements but Serena Kampala keeps losing face because its top management will not undertaje its obligations for proper oversight? Hopefully someone reading this with authority to fo domething about it will take the intiative as an SOS from a hotel fan?
Serena Islamabad is superlative with its hands on management!
