Proud to be Canadian campaign kicks off

Order of Canada recipient Sultan Jessa, a retired journalist now living in Montreal, is once again co-chairing the second annual “Proud to be a Canadian” campaign.

The campaign is the idea of Tory MP Guy Lauzon, also the deputy chief whip, who wants to gain more recognition for his riding.

Lauzon is attempting to leap into prominence as the federal riding which displays the most flags on Canada Day .

This year marks the 140th anniversary of Canada’s birthday.

Jessa, a former Citizen of the Year, along with Jake Lamoureux, also a recipient of the Order of Canada, are c0-chairing the campaign.

Last year, more than 25,000 red and white maple leaf flags were displayed in Stormont, Dundas and South Glengarry.

This year, Lauzon is trying to surpass that number and has been challenged by half a dozen other ridings.

“I am fiercely proud of Canada,” said Jessa. “This is another opportunity for us to show how much we love our country.”
