The Aga Khan Foundation is sending reinforcements to teachers on the frontlines of the fight against global poverty.
The not-for-profit development agency, holding its national nine-city World Partnership Walk this Sunday, is on pace to raise $1.4 million in donations and corporate sponsorship from Lower Mainlanders through the event at Stanley Park.
More than $5 million tallied nationally will be used for teacher-targeted projects spanning elementary schools to post- secondary institutions for communities in Asia and Africa.
“We believe it is the teachers who will eventually determine the quality of education,” said regional manager Shellina Lakhdhir. “So we provide the leadership, we provide the training and the community comes up with additional support.”
Lakhdhir said the foundation partners with other international agencies that raise buildings rather than fund people to ensure each cent raised by the volunteer organization is spent wisely.
