Hers is a success story of sheer determination and resolve to overcome both religious and societal prejudice. Cushioned with these factors she has risen through the ranks to become the Chief Administrator of Kenya’s second largest hospital — the Coast General Hospital.
At a time when culture denies many women and girls an opportunity to excel and reach their full potential, Dr Khadija Shikely has defied all odds to become an epitome of hope to thousands of girls not only at the Coast, but all over the country.
Sitting in her office at the administration block of the Coast General Hospital she savours her success. “If I had not fought hard to overcome the prejudices surrounding Muslim girls and their education, I would not be here today celebrating my success,” Shikely says.

Never a person to shy away from an opportunity that is set to benefit the community, she is also a member of the Aga Khan Foundation East African Region on Early Childhood Foundation. The foundation funds the less fortunate and is also involved in programmes aimed at empowering the poor.

Growing up I always wanted to be in the Healthcare field because of the inspiration that Dr. Khadija Shikely gave to me.
