It’s not easy to get a balanced view of Islam in today’s world. The Aga Khan bemoaned this fact in a news item on National Public Radio’s Morning Edition last Monday. A Harvard-educated British citizen who lives in France, the Aga Khan is the leader of the 15 million-member Ismaili sect of Shi’a Islam with members in more than two dozen countries. This soft-spoken man referred to a “conflict of ignorance” and a “gap of understanding” regarding the many different areas of the Islamic world.
The Aga Khan appealed for promoting the idea of pluralism among civilizations, cultures and religions – including his own. He further contended that the so-called religious conflicts in the world today are not really rooted in theology, but in politics, and need to be addressed as such.
